"Catch Me in the Air" is a song by Rina Sawayama from her sophomore studio album Hold the Girl (2022). The song served as the album's second official single and was released on 27 June 2022 through Dirty Hit. It is about Sawayama's mother who is a single mother.

Sawayama debuted the song during her Glasgow show of The Dynasty Tour on 13 November 2021, and it was a regular part of the setlist.[2]

Background[]

Rina Sawayama released her critically-acclaimed debut studio album Sawayama in April 2020. On its first anniversary, Sawayama revealed that she has "already started [writing] album 2".

Later that year, in November, Sawayama embarked on her The Dynasty Tour. During the fourth show of the tour in Glasgow, Scotland, Sawayama debuted "Catch Me in the Air" from her upcoming second album.

I wrote a very special song and it's about my relationship with my mom who's a single mom. [...] I just wanted to write the fact that we have caught each other when we're falling, and so this song is called "Catch Me in the Air".

— Sawayama introducing the song on her Dynasty Tour

It was ultimately added on the regular setlist for the North American second leg of the Dynasty Tour, from 9 April 2022 to 13 May 2022.

Release[]

On 13 June 2022, Sawayama asked fans for live clips of "Catch Me in the Air" at the Dynasty Tour.[3] The song was announced by Sawayama as Hold the Girl's second single on 24 June 2022, with a date for 27 June. Additionally, a snippet of the song was made available on TikTok.[4]

Composition and production[]

According to Hannah Ewens from Rolling Stone, the song was "heavily" inspired by Irish pop band The Corrs "pitched to Gwen Stefani".[5]

Sawayama started writing "Catch Me in the Air" at the end of 2020. "I had 'Catch Me in the Air' written down as a note already. From the pre-chorus to the chorus I wanted to have that feeling of a lift, as though you’re jumping off a cliff into crystal-clear water," she said on an interview with Rolling Stone in June 2022. To complete the production, Sawayama sent pictures of what she wanted it to sound like to producer Stuart Price. "It was someone meditating on the edge of the cliff, it was seagulls, it was someone on a pier, it was Irish coastline, waves hitting," she recalls. "And [Price] absolutely nailed it, it does sound like that."[5] "Catch Me in the Air" was the first track Sawayama worked on with producer Stuart Price.[1]

Lyrics[]

Hey there
Little girl, don't you wanna see the world?
Don't be scared
Hey there, little world
Are you ready for this girl
Do you dare?

Only took 9 months and a lot of love
Carried all our dreams and she's ready now, ooh
Hey there little girl
Don't you wanna see the world (Now let's go!)

I ran away where clouds kiss the mountain peaks
I was afraid but you put the wings on me
Feet on the edge
Feet on the edge

So catch me in the air, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
(Mama, look at me now)
Catch me in the air, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
(Mama, look at me now, I'm flying, I'm flying)

Twenty years all alone
Bound together to the phone
Was it fate?
Watched you decorating all the walls, made a prison of our home
No escape

When you ran away where clouds kiss the mountain peaks
I was afraid but you left your wings on me
Feet on the edge
Feet on the edge

So catch me in the air, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
(Mama, look at me now)
Catch me in the air, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
(Mama, look at me now)
So catch me in the air, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah!

And they will never know
The fear of making a mistake
The risk you take, the pain you create
But, mama, look at us now
High above the clouds
Yeah, I hope that you're, hope that you're proud

(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
So catch me in the air
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
Yeah
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
Mama, look at me now, I'm flying
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
Mama, look at me now, I'm flying

Save each other in every way
Feel the fear as we float in the sea
Look at us now
Way past the clouds that haunted your dreams
I hope that you're proud

Save each other in every way
Feel the fear as we float in the sea
Look at us now
Way past the clouds that haunted your dreams
I hope that you're proud
