"Hurricanes" is a song recorded by Rina Sawayama, taken from her sophomore album Hold the Girl, which was released on 16 September 2022 through Dirty Hit. The song served as the album's fifth single and was released on 12 September 2022. It was written by Sawayama herself along with long-time collaborator Clarence Clarity, and produced by Sawayama and Clarity along with Stuart Price.
Composition[]
According to Sawayama, the song is about "self-sabotage and running into situations that aren't good for you." Written by Sawayama and Clarence Clarity, she felt that the production of the song originally sounded a bit like The Cardigans and "a bit of '60s surf" and it just "wasn't working". Sawayama stated, "I needed it to sound more driving, like being propelled forward throughout the song, like a hurricane." She further added, "when Stuart Price came on board later on, he was also working with The Killers, and he suggested listening to them as a reference for the drums. Once we rerecorded the drums, it all fell into place."[1]
Release[]
The song's title was revealed by Sawayama on an Instagram post in June 2022.[2] On 6 August, the song was performed live at Sawayama's set during the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco. A few days later, Sawayama shared a snippet of the song on TikTok.
The song was released as the fifth single off Hold the Girl on 12 September 2022, and premiered on BBC Radio 1 as the "Hottest Record" of the day.[3] A single EP is available on streaming platforms Spotify and Deezer, which contains the previous singles from the album, including "This Hell" and "Hold the Girl".[4]

Lyrics[]
April showers finally making way for warmer weather
But yet I still feel the same
Doing yoga just to feel untethered but my mind keeps
Ru-ru-ru-running away
Chasing hurricanes
Cause I can't feel the rain
Second it's my pain
Cause I've been walking around in chains
So won't you give me a sign if you're really there?
'Cause I've been lost inside waiting on a prayer
Until I find your love, until the wind blows down
I'm running, I'm running, running into hurricanes
Always wanted to be best at everything
Even when it felt the worst at myself (Worst at myself)
So I create a storm and bury it deep, hiding the key
In plain sight just in case I need help, help
Chasing hurricanes
Cause I can't feel the rain
So won't you give me a sign if you're really there?
'Cause I've been lost inside waiting on a prayer
Until I find your love, until the wind blows down
I'm running, I'm running, running in the hurricanes
So won't you give me a ride? Be my getaway
I'm not the girl I've tried to be yesterday
Until I find your love, until the wind blows down
I'm running, I'm running, running into hurricanes
Hurricanes
Ooh, ooh
Ooh
The wind cycle, I'm spinning
Crashed through the floor
Don't give me heaven, I'm flying
Tearing down the doors of the city
Ooh, you know I'm running, I'm running, running into hurricanes
So won't you give me a sign if you're really there?
'Cause I've been lost inside waiting on a prayer
Until I find your love, until the wind blows down
I'm running, I'm running, running into hurricanes
So won't you give me a ride? Be my getaway
I'm not the girl I tried to be yesterday
Until I find your love, until the wind blows down
I'm running, I'm running, running into hurricanes
